Golden Lions....Whitewashed By Province!

The Annus horribilis continues for the Lions who are no longer Golden as they were handed a 32-0 whitewashing by Western Province in a typically one sided encounter which sees John Mitchell tasting what Dick Muir spatlion_zebra out in the Super 14 when he coached the Lions.

Full marks to Province who prevented the Lions scoring and to be fair they are a game lot who never stopped trying but there is very little quality in the ranks at the moment.

Although John Mitchell has managed to introduce a little more organization to their play they just have no clue on how to finish and countless opportunities were lost to score.

Once the  Lions had run around but got nowhere for the opening ten minutes it was all Western Province who let their forwards run at the Lion’s defence at will as the Gauteng outfit  attempted to stop the inevitable.

Tries soon followed by Pieter Louw and Conrad Jantjes and Willem de Waal was kept busy all afternoon with shots at the poles.

It was impressive to see the relentless effort that the Lions put into trying to break down the Province defence but try as they might it was men against boys as the Lions proved what the diehard Lions fans only whisper: “ We could be themselves slipping out of the premier division if this impotent rugby of their continues”.

For Province they will take the win but how much sweeter it would have been if they could have got a four-try bonus point and that may still come into play as the competition gets to the semi final stage.
