Current Leicester Tigers centre and former All Black Aaron Mauger is set to leave Welford Road come the end of the season.
The move back to
New Zealand is in a hope to return into the All Black fold for the upcoming 2011 World Cup, a task that in itself could prove quite a challenge given the likes of a certain Ma’a Nonu.
All Black selectors could however take into account the Carter-Mauger factor as the two have made an indomitable partnership over the years for Canterbury, The Crusaders and the All Blacks. This, coupled with the fact that without Carter the All Blacks are a shadow of the team they could be, could force selectors’ hands with regards to Mauger’s inclusion in the All Black squad. While Nonu provides a solid physical presence in the midfield it is Mauger’s flair that has been missing from the All Black backline, and the New Zealand public will be hoping that he’s return will once again ignite the All Black backline.
The 29-year-old inside centre (second-five eigth if you’re a Kiwi) has represented the Tigers in 50 matches, scoring 8 tries and was an integral part of the Tigers’ Premiership winning squad, taking over captaincy reins for a short stint from Martin Corry.
