Now, I have no problem with the guy personally, despite his multiple blunders at press conferences and that ridiculous moustache. No, no problem there. What I do have a problem with is losing.
If the players were useless, I would say, "Ok, so they're trying hard, but they suck, it's not anybody's fault, they just have no talent." Much the same as Scotland usually console themselves after losing I guess and why I think Nick Mallett has the best coaching job in the world with Italy.
But that isn't the case. South Africa and New Zealand have the most talented pool of players to pick from in the world at any given time. What that means is that if the team picked from that pool of players doesn't perform, then it must have something to do with the way they're playing or being told to play by their coaches.
The players have the ability, they have the skill and they definitely have the talent. They haven't stopped trying, they're the same guys who dominated the Super 14 and gave us the best Currie Cup we've seen in years, so it's clearly not their doing.
The coaches then have somehow lost the plot. They're persisting with a game plan that clearly doesn't work anymore; they're out of ideas, at the end of the rope, walking the plank towards another mediocre match and a mass of disgruntled fans waiting at the airport with guillotines and chainsaws.
The ship needs steadying, a plan is needed and the right man to do said steadying is clearly not part of the current coaching team. I'm not sure who the right man is. A lot of names have been bandied about, Plumtree, Heyneke Meyer, Rassie Erasmus, John Mitchell and Dawie Theron to name a few. Even Jake White has been mentioned.
We lost to Scotland. If that isn't a clear message then I don't know what is. Come on SARU, get your act together.
