He is up against some seasoned pro’s in Butch James and Jaco Taute this season and one shouldn’t be surprised to even see Rory Kockott staking a claim to the Lions No.10 jersey.
For me, Elton is one of the best kickers in the games at the moment but he is a long way off ousting Lambie or Steyn for the Springbok spot. He was a glorified tourist on the UK tour with the Boks and when he finally got a run against the BaaBaas did not threaten.
Still on Wednesday the talented flyhalf gets his first chance to impress with a run on start against the Argentinean Tucuman side at Coco-Cola Park.
The big concern that many have about Jantjies is that for a young man he looks out of condition and slightly unfit for the fast pace of Super Rugby. It is something that Coach John Mitchell has tried to address by purposely not playing him until he is properly conditioned.
“Elton is sharper now. He has about five weeks of conditioning behind him to get his match-fitness on par,”said Mitchell.
In two weeks time the Lions with take on The Bulls in their first Super Rugby match so the game against Tucuman is going to be vital if they are going to get their combinations right. Another try out they will employ tonight will be putting James Kamana at fullback and Patric Cilliers gets another opportunity at tighthead. Doppies Le Grange also will play and must be relishing his chance to play with a far stronger Lions side this year.
This should be a good test of The Lions ability as they will be taking on the Argentinean Club Champs and will want to show that their win against The Sharks was not a flash in the pan.
