Boks Rankings: Hougaard Gets a 2 & Kanko a 6

“Some of the refereeing decisions were puzzling, however we did not respond the way we should have done,” says PDV. This is the way we have responded to the appalling performance the Springboks put up.

15: Zane Kirchner – 4

The player was suffocating at fullback as he made blunder after blunder under the high ball. Insipid is his ability to attack on the one rare occasion he was chasing the ball down, stepped off the gas to let Scotland get to the ball first.

14: Gio Aplon – 4

Aplon hardly saw the ball but was guilty of knocking on repeatedly and his contribution to the team was negligible.

13: Frans Steyn – 6

Seemed to be the only player in the backline who was willing to tackle which for the most part he did well. Missed a long range penalty but generally was solid in defence.

12: Jean de Villiers – 4

Played an insignificant role and proved that he surely cannot be the best centre that the country has. Poor on defence and lacking creativity on attack.

11: Lwazi Mvovo – 5

If only the ball had got to him possibly the result would have been different. Had a few good runs that underlined his pace but was forced to look for the ball all over the field.

10: Morne Steyn – 4

One dimensional and seemed powerless to do anything else but kick away possession all match. Terrible in defence and the Hougaard/Steyn combination was a shambles.

9: Francois Hougaard – 2

Simply did not pitch up for the match. Outplayed by his opposite number and clueless with regards to his tactical kicking.

8: Ryan Kankowski – 6

Was hungry to prove why he belonged in the team and was the rose amongst a thorny pack. Showed good pace at times and was eager to run with the ball when he found space. In less than ideal conditions under foot he showed that he could run well in all conditions.

7: Juan Smith – 5

After two solid test matches this was a let down as he was infected with the disease of knocking on the ball and elementary errors.

6: Deon Stegmann – 2

One has no idea why he has been allowed to be in the squad let alone start in all three tests and is destined to be listed amongst the worst players to play for the Boks. A forgettable player who is clearly not up to test match level.

5: Victor Matfield – 5

Has enjoyed good success on tour but this was a poor match by his high standards. Clearly was annoyed by the referees calls which seem to make him and the team lose focus. Did not dominate the lineouts in the way we have come to expect.

4: Bakkies Botha – 3

Needed a 4x4 bakkie but only saw a Bantam bakkie that was stuck in first gear with the handbrake up. Ineffective in the loose and seemed exhausted way before he was subbed after 60 minutes.

3: Jannie du Plessis – 4

Struggled in the wet conditions and probably lost the battle against his opposite number.

2: Bismarck du Plessis – 3

Worst match Bismark has ever played for the Springboks. Failed to find his jumpers in three consecutive lineouts and PDV was forced to sub him late in the second half.

1: Tendai Mtawarira – 5

Has enjoyed two great matches so far but this time he seemed less dominant in the scrum and was well tackled when he got the ball in hand. Failed to make much impact with his marching type surges.

18: Flip van der Merwe – 5

Was far better than Bakkies who he subbed and although he joined the game at the highest time of desperation attempted to make a difference with some good work in the mauls.

19: Willem Alberts – 6

How Stegman consistently started before Alberts is an enigma. Twice he has come off the bench and twice he has scored a try. Powerful at the breakdown he immediately made a difference to the pack of forwards but it was too little too late.

20: Ruan Pienaar – 4

Poor in all departments and has developed the irritating habit of throwing his arms in the air in protest to the ref. With Charl Mcleod joining the squad it is going to be interesting to see who gets the nod to start against England.

21: Pat Lambie – 4

Heart goes out to Lambie who looks confused with the way he is being forced to play. Like a genius being taught by a dunce the frustration he must be going through is tangible. Still managed to tackle and defend better than Morne but his kicking for goal is a concern.

Basically if this was a matric class only Kanko,Alberts and Mvovo would have passed...and a standard grade pass at that.

Hahahha I like that: "Like a genius being taught by a dunce"

Alberts showed his impact in European conditions last week - not sure why he was not picked from the word go.

Lambie should never have been brought on / OR he should have started at fullback. If Steyn had stayed on and made that kick, it might just have kept the Boks interested and put the pressure on the Scots.

Unfortunately you cannot put 15 guys on a field with no real game plan and hope that individual brilliance is going to win it for you.
