We seem to always expect Fourie du Preez to perform, he plays behind a great pack of forwards and has one of the best flyhalf’s next to him so there are no excuses we say. This time however the Chiefs were the equal to the Bulls pack even putting them in reverse gear at times and Morne was having his own few moments of dreadfulness. Through it all the Bulls No. 9 held his ground and read the game superbly and provided the calm and experience of a world beater. Sniping runs, well weighted kicks and fearless in defense he wore the label as the world’s best with pride.
Although the kicking game of the Bulls threatened to implode in their faces as the Chiefs came out in the second half determined to run the ball back at every opportunity, poor handling and countless knock-ons of the high ball allowed the Bulls to slowly poison the Chiefs into submission. With 5 minutes to go the Bulls had sewn up the match but courageously they pressed forward and went for the opportunity to score a bonus point try. A great take at the lineout, a simply maul and over they went to score their fourth try and it underlined just how formidable the Bulls are. They don’t play the prettiest rugby but hell they can squeeze the life out to the opposition when they want to.
The Bulls do need however to improve their kicking game on four occasions they where in their 22 and didn’t kick the ball out and four times the Chiefs ran it back all the way into the Bulls last quarter. It’s a great tactic if you love tackling but better runners will relish getting that type of ball against a tiring defense.

final 10 minutes of the match. The lead swapped places for most of the match and it was a case of who would blink first as the shaky boot of Morne Steyn gave the Chiefs a sniff at a colossal upset. But the best scrummie in the world was still on the park and masterminded what turned out to be a great win for Pretoria’s finest boys in blue.
