Hurricanes...Like Lambies to The Slaughter

With the New Zealanders affinity with sheep in a way it was appropriate to see the future Springbok fullback Pat Lambie lambieplaying in only his second Super 14 games producing a performance that was very near to perfection against a Hurricanes outfit that fell a sheep at the wheel in the final minutes of the match. Final Score: 29-26.

Lambie who has long been heralded as the next best thing in Sharks rugby since his school days at Michaelhouse was inspirational at fullback and looked in total command of his position throughout the match.  His confidence and courage was a shear delight to watch and it must have calmed selectors and fans nerves who have wondered if a replacement could be found to fill the evergreen boots of Stefan Terblanche.

Faultless under the high ball Lambie jumped and gathered all night will accomplished ease, ran with pace and was rewarded early on in the match as he found himself on the wing and jogged over the try line to record his first Super 14 try. It was just the start the Sharks needed as they begin to scrabble their way back into the competition after losing 5 matches on the trot. For once the much condemned scrum held its own and even bullied the Canes pack back at times recording a heel against the head to underline their rare dominance in this department.

But I wouldn’t want to pull the wool over your eyes and say that it was just Lambie and the front row that were the cause of the dramatic reversal of results.  As if to ram home the point that he is still the Springbok left wing incumbent, JP Pietersen finished off a breath taking try that saw  Terblanche, Bismarck, Botes and Kockott  combining with silken handeling as the Sharks ran from their own 22m line to score this season’s most watched try.

Special mention must also be made of Ruan Pienaar who looked for once to be the player that everyone knows he can be, a footballer who can read the game like a comic book, turn on electric pace at will and kick with unerring accuracy. 19 points in the game and the pressure penalty in the vanishing seconds of the game and finally Pienaar is playing the type of rugby that can see him seriously challenge for a place in the ‘Bok team this year.

All in all it was a very gratifying victory and a magnificent way to end the Australasian tour which threatened at one stage to end the careers of coaches and players prematurely.  The Shark Tank will start to fill up again as rehabilitated confidence swims through the veins of player and fan alike. The Reds are coming, the Sharks are at home… “Is it possible the Sharks can still make the Semis”? is being echoed in the land of the golden coast. SEE THE VIDEO HERE

Ja Lambie is pure class and we will see him in the 'bok team one of these day and hopefully in the next WC. Great win by the Sharks.
