Lions Caned and Stuffed. 73-12

Records tumbled as the Lions were whipped into oblivion by a Waratah’s team that would have got more of workout if they had been playing against a school U13 team. Lest we forget this is a side coached by the Springbok Assistant Coach Dick Muir who should know a thing or two about defense and yet the Lions were paralytic in their efforts to stop the ‘Tahs from cantering in 11 tries.

It is quite obvious the Lions now only have one plan and all the teams now know it. Run!  It doesn’t matter where you are in the field, run Forest run! And when you don’t want to run kick the ball aimlessly to the opposition. It would be fine if the Lions knew how to finish but time after time the Lions strung 15 or more phases together only to turn the ball over to the ‘tahs who would sprint the field to score.

The Lions were simply appalling and just never turned up to play a game of rugby. Hammered in the scrum, pounded in the mauls and rucks and flaccid in tackling there was always going to be one outcome but what type of team can allow in 11 tries?

There is so much deficient in this team that one has to wonder if they even deserve to be playing at this level? Why on earth pay Spencer a million bucks to play the way he did? Looking more like a pirate, Spencer failed to gain much distance with his kicks, failed to provide stability in the fragile backline and looked terribly unfit. Earl Rose, he simply cannot be the best the Lions can find, had yet another shocker, his decision making is dreadful, kicking away the ball aimlessly when he should run and running when he has no hope in hell of making it. He proudly announced at the start of the season that he had bulked up and put on 10 kgs for this season, where is it Earl? Under the bandage under the headgear, the headgear, shoulder pads, shin guards? Heavier boots with lead boot laces?

One feels for the few good players in this team, Wandile Mjekuvu still kept trying but it must be demoralizing to play in this type of side and Le Grange looked impressive in a losing team.

It is going to be a heck of a long season for the Lions and with this type of performance a whitewash season must surely be on the cards.

Very poor effort they need to practice, get new player or a new coach but they really need to do something.
