Lions Hammer The Argies Featured

If people thought the runaway win The Lions executed against The Sharks earlier this month was a flash in the pan, then the thrashing of Argentinean champions Tucuman would have made even the most cynical Lions critic stand up and take notice.

The Lions systematically crushed Tucuman in what became a one sided match virtually from the kick off. 82-19 was the final score and even that score line flattered the visitors!

John Mitchell has managed to bring together what looks to be a formidable team who is not only going to compete in Super Rugby but many now believe could well be one of the front runners. Few would argue with that if you had witnessed the way they  pummelled the Argies.

Within the first 13 minutes of the match The Lions had crossed the try line no more than three times and there was no way Tucuman were going to come back. Kamana from New Zealand playing at fullback was particularly impressive in the opening stages of the match and looked to be an exciting prospect.

At the end a record 12 tries were scored by The Lions with Waylon Murray finally showing the form that won him a Springbok cap. In fact the entire backline including a rejuvenated Lionel Mapoe was dynamic and looked for work for the full 80 minutes.

Creative moves and angles run by the backs saw Tucuman defending like blind men and if The Lions didn’t make a number of crucial handling errors they would have got to the century with ease.

Elton Jantjies played in his first match of the season and the Springbok flyhalf showed that he was well conditioned, displaying some deft skills and slotting nine conversions.

That now makes it two out of two for The Lions and they will be hoping that they can continue to surprise throughout the Super season. Few will be shocked to see them in the playoffs come July!

Scorers:

For the Lions:
Tries:
Van Schalkwyk 2, Kamana, Strauss 2, Killian 2, Murray, Vermaak, Minnie, La Grange, Mapoe
Cons: Jantjies 9, Francis 2

lets be honest, the only reason i even know Tucuman exists is because of that big fight they had in 1993 with the bok tourists... Having said that, the Lions could replicate what the Reds did in the S14 last year.Ie. Scare the sh*t out of everyone...

Lions will be a massive threat this year. So good to see them playing rugby again.
