It is a game that will not be remembered as one of the great spectacles of Super 14 rugby but there are definite signs that if Dick Muir can keep this team together they will be a serious threat next season. Burton Francis had a solid game in his first start at flyhalf and seemed to grow in confidence as the game progressed, however if the Lions had a fit Carlos Spencer one wonders if possibly the Lions would have been able to cause a major upset.
On the whole the Lions tried to defend as best they could and you have got to say this is one area they have improved in. But come scrum time little Stevie Walsh was particularly harsh on a Lions scrum that was repeatedly marched backwards. A penalty try and a sin binning of Kevin Buys seemed unsympathetic but credit to the Lions they fronted up each time with a great amount of enthusiasm.
What would a report about the Lions be without something about Earl ‘robo cop’ Rose? He must have been hoping to stay on the bench but Dusty was soon off and Earl was on trying his best to stay out of trouble and kicking everything he got. Then he decided to run from behind his tryline! Crazy stuff especially as the Brumbies prop easily ran him down and dumped him to the ground in the season’s biggest 40kg mismatch.
However on the positive side loud applause has to be given once again to Wandile Mjekevu who produced one of the most memorable moments of the match when he chased down and executed a wonderful try saving tackle. He is big, strong and fast and is having a great season so far, long may it continue.
In the end the result was what most thought it would be but the Brumbies will be frustrated that they could not get a bonus point and the Lions will without doubt feel that had the ball stayed in hand more they could have caused the upset of the week. (See the video here)
