Super 14 Player Stock-Take !

We've almost reached the middle of this years Super 14 as Week 7 of the competition rolls in. It's traditionally tricky to judge the state of competition at this stage but fans will be fans and many have already picked their favourites to take this years title. Cough, Stormers ...

Although the Bulls are looking unstoppabull, I'm sure there'll be a few twists in the tail yet. Going beyond picking winning teams, I've picked two sides that represent the best of the Super 14. My first side is a pick of the best players in a World XV Super 14 squad and the second pick is a more parochial best of South African Super 14 players squad.

South Africa have seven players in a World XV Super 14 selection, Australia have four players, New Zealand three and Fiji one. Sounds like an acceptable 'golden ratio' to me.

What do you think ?

Super 14 team:
15. Adam Ashley-Cooper (Aus)
14. Sireli Naqalevuki (Fiji)
13. Jaque Fourie (RSA)
12. Wynand Olivier (RSA)
11. Brian Habana(RSA)
10. Quaid Cooper (Aus)
9. Fourie Du Preez (RSA)
8. Richie McCaw (NZ)
7. George Smith (Aus)
6. Juan Smith (RSA)
5. Victor Matfield (RSA)
4. Andries Bekker (RSA)
3. Neemiah Tialata (NZ)
2. Andrew Hore (NZ)
1. Benn Robinson (Aus)

SA Team
15. Joe Pieterson
14. Frans Hougaard
13. Jaque Fourie
12. Wynand Olivier
11. Brian Habana
10. Morne Steyn
9. Fourie Du Preez
8. Duane Vermeulen
7. Juan Smith
6. Schalk Burger
5. Victor Matfield
4. Andries Bekker
3 Brok Harris
2. Bismarck Du Plessis
1. Wicus Blaauw

Agree/disagree ?

I'll admit, I might be just a bit biased as South Africa have dominated much of the early part of the competition although they've admittedly had the lions share of home games but nonetheless it should be interesting to see how this list looks after Week 14.

What are your picks ?

Well, I agree 80% with this team. Joe was the inform 15 before his injury. Only difference is Spies @ 8 and Guthro at 3 with Barney @ 1. No Werner Kruger anywere near a Bok team please!!

Haha Joe Pietersen didnt even make the touring squad for the Stormers!Only Bismarck from the Sharks? This team would get beaten by Zimbabwe.

Mr. editor/reporter, your SA team smells of WP payers only. Duane Vermeulen ahead of Spies??? Brock and Wicus(both X Leopards players) ahead of Guthro or Werner Kruger and even WP Nel and Wian ????
And to put Naqalevuki in the world S14 team because he had maybe 2 semi-good games out of his last 50??? That's nuts!!!! If you're gonna pick players on their last game or 2 games' performances, that would be defeating the object of continuity, not so???

Brok Harris? Not on your life! And Spies and Kanko are light years ahead of Duane Vermulan!!!

Only people who should complain are the Sharks fans. Where are they in this team? Only Bismarck? I agree Rogue the form fullback is definitely Stefan but they will never pick him.

what the hell is going on here? Richie McCaw is not an 8th man! Kieran Read is the Crusaders 8th man. And I'm sorry but Duane Vermeulen is not nearly as experienced as Pierre Spies, I would much rather have him off the bench. Aren't journalists supposed to be neutral? All I hear is Stormers, Stormers, Stormers. Pathetic. And I'm a ardent Stormers fan myself.

Just one mistake I see there Greg...You left out the captain? John Smit!

You seem to have a Stormers bias not a South African bias. Joe Pietersen at fullback? Too small! Kirchener or Terblanche are the form fullbacks.
