The Lions did well to hold the Bulls machine away from the try line for the first half but come the second half the PretoriansCopy_of_001_2907blog were practically lining up to score. Six tries in the second half of their clash against the Lions at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday secured a 51-11 win and saw the Vodacom Bulls jump five points clear of their nearest rivals on the Vodacom Super 14 log.

The Bulls had a slender 12-8 lead at the break against a determined opponent, but once Derick Kuün was driven over in the second minute after the restart, the result was inevitable.

Few expected the Bulls to score five more tries though, with a brace in short succession by speedster Gerhard van den Heever breaking the Lions defence codes open.

All expected Morné Steyn to find his range again after some wayward kicking on the overseas trip, and the pivot did not disappoint, kicking 21 points and scoring the bonus point try.

“We knew we had to stay patient on attack and use the opportunities we were creating,” Bulls captain, Victor Matfield, said afterwards.

“The Lions closed us down at the breakdown in the first half. I knew we needed to get a lead of more than seven before we could really attack.”

The first half was a typical derby between the two northerly foes, with massive hits and huge pressure resulting in mistakes from both sides. The Lions scored a well worked try shortly before the break, but was completely shut out in the second half as the Bulls hit their straps.

Man, what a team... If they get a home-semi, it's over, don't think anyone will stop them.
